You could write a plugin, that way you can have the style chooser and your
style defaulting module run via AxAddPlugin. I think you have access to the
config then (but I'm not entirely sure).
Alternatively, you might go and dig inside the AxKit source to see if you can
patch it right there (and send us a diff :). I don't know about the others
but in my opinion the behaviour you suggested sounds reasonable to make it
into the core.
