I'm a little confused by the output 'looking for '-lxml2' whcich comes back
as 'yes' and the warning indicating the library cannot be found as they

The yes could mean anything, look inside Makefile.PL and try to see why it gives those messages. That will most likely give you the answer to your question.

It's strange as the XML::Sax and XML::Namespace libraries both appear to
build and test ok against libxml2.

I don't know what XML::Namespace is (thinking about XML::NamespaceSupport?) but XML::SAX doesn't need libxml2 (no more than XML::NSS).
