yeah:
   checking for iconv() in -liconv... yes

   $> man -s 3 iconv

does bring up the gnu iconv (Sun's version of man), but there's both the Sun and the 
GNU installed. That's what I'm afraid is the root of the problem. Maybe I need to 
force it to use the GNU version at /usr/local/bin/iconv.
