My solution was much the same - downgrade to 1.6 for the time being. >> Is there a particular reason you're not installing from the ports? My dev env is a couple of ancient sun boxes needed for legacy software, and our live environment is a cluster of BSD boxes. The only way we can even attempt to keep some sense of version control is to install everything by hand :(
