Thanks everybody, for your responses on this subject, I was afraid that I might not find an easy answer to this one. I have taken a step back, as an interrim measure, and have stripped the root tags from the XML data and passed the individual data blocks to xsltproc, one at a time. It's inelegant, but it means that I get the progressive output that I need for this job.
