Thanks for all the suggestions. I removed the debian package for AxKit
and configured CPAN... seems to be working alright. However, it cannot
install the optional packages XML::LibXML and XML::LibXSLT. I'm not
sure what exactly is wrong, but during the attempted install it
complains that xml2-config did not run correctly. What exactly is
xml2-config? I have libxml2 installed, but I'm guessing the default
LIB and INC settings aren't correct. I'm not sure how to fix this
though.

That was the problem... I could never find a debian package for
libxml-libxslt-perl. Seems really obvious now that you mention it.
