Well, yes, it is planned and being discussed.

I'm not a part of the developer team, so take this as coming from a
outside source, but I hang around much with the developers. They need to
focus on their respective projects to make the day when they can work
on AxKit-NG get closer, so this is best response you can get, I guess.

There is not at this time any available timeframe for a AxKit 2 release,
i.e. AxKit on mod_perl 2. The latter is itself not officially released,
but is getting there.

The developers are discussing how to build AxKit 2, there are many
possible ways to attack that. However, all the developers are very,
very busy, and have little time to take on this rather large project.
It is on everyone's agenda though, so it will happen, but no-one knows
when.

The CVS contains a fair amount of bugfixes, and those in MAIN
are not very intrusive, so it is fairly stable. However, right now, you
might want to avoid it, as axkit://-uris don't work, and doesn't pass
make test.

I believe a 1.6.3 version could be produced, but that the bugs currently
open in the queue
https://rt.cpan.org/NoAuth/Bugs.html?Dist=AxKit
might deserve some attention first. Some are trivial, some are hard,
people are encouraged to have a look.

Cheers,
