don't know if this helps.. i have been using Natty for quite some time now..
Ever since compositing broke with an update earlier this month, i've been
using a desktop with no application menus.
I use gnome-panel as my fallback solution, plus metacity.

It's really a great experience: i learn a lot about useful UI design by NOT
having appmenus.
