I never thought of the current text in such a way that you observed but then
again I am "computer literate".

The proposed text Matthew Paul Thomas posted seems more explanatory and seems
to make even a person which is "computer illiterate" to understand what is
happening.

Best regards

My original design for the alert had primary text: "Are you sure you
want to close all programs and shut down the computer?" The countdown
was supposed to be secondary text, not primary text.

I think this would have prevented the problem you observed.
