I was always confused by this. 1 - What is "deployment"? The mp3 patent holders clearly define it? The number of machines running Ubuntu, with the gstreamer-ugly plugins, in countries where the patents hold is certainly higher than 100. And it was Canonical who made those installations easy by giving installation medias for free and hosting the plugins in official repositories. 2 - To which extend the argument of "not installing by default" is legally safe? Playing DVD without paying licenses is illegal, but that does not stop Ubuntu packages for laying the libdvdcss there. Why turning this script into a GUI with a disclaimer would suddenly turn it illegal?
