I believe this right now, look: If an icon is displayed with counter, which show? mails, conversations, note that the indicator is a messaging menu for more than one application. so when you get a new thing is the osd notifications to inform you in detail what is happening, the panel icon just says that is "new messages" when you decide to display it. no need counter i think.
