Alex,

It now occurs to me that you might be referring to
a language "aptitude" test that was and probably still
is given to prospective missionaries.  Twenty or thirty
years ago, about half of Mormon missionaries from the USA
were sent to English-speaking areas, and the rest were
taught a second language.  The percentages may have changed
radically by now (with more emphasis on Spanish and
Portuguese particularly).

The language aptitude test was used to identify those who
were more likely to succeed in learning a new language.
