Hi Sam,
Was just browsing through Ancestry and found Manuel and "Annie" in the 1900
census in Providence. Two sons Antonio and Frank. Is this your family?

             Joanne

Hello Phil; My great grandmother was a Silva. I have never been able to
pinpoint which island. Her name was Ana Emilia Silva and she married Manuel
Jose Fraga. They lived in East Providence, RI. In the 1920’s her son, my
grandfather and his family moved to CA. My aunt tells me we have Perry
relatives “back east” somewhere. The story goes that my grandfather’s brother
moved to MA with his wife and young daughter and died there at a rather young
age. This last part is really speculation. Anyway, that’s about all the
information I have. Just thought I’d throw it out there in case it rang a bell
with you. Happy ancestor hunting, Sam in CA

Iam a Perry (Pereira). Iam from Gloucester MA. and was born on Portigee Hill
and baptised in the Portugee Church Our Lady Of Good Voyage, as Filipe Pereira
(now Philip Perry). My father's people were from Faial, his mother was a
Caroline de Silva from Horta and his father was John Pereira form Horta. They
came to this country via New Bedford then to Gloucester. My Vovo Was a whaler.
I need more imformation about their backgrounds. My avo was a de Silva and her
mother was an Augusta.

Hi Pat,
I'm very familiar with Jamestown, It has become quite an upscale community.
Many of the residents are employed in Newport,R.I. at the Naval Base. It's a
beautiful seaside community.
As for the Pereira's, I think that many of them became Perrys. My family did.
I believe the name change was to Americanize the family as there was a great
deal of bigotry surrounding the Portuguese. There still is even though the
majority of surnames in the local phone book are of Portuguese descent.

Hi Joanne,
I grew up in Jamestown, a small island off Newport, RI. My grandfather, Thomas
Perry (Thomas Pereira Jorge de Escobar) was born in 1868 in Cedros, Faial. He
and his brother Manuel first settled in new Bedford, MA. My grandfather, Thomas
Perry, married my grandmother, Maria Conceicao Avila in New Bedford, MA, 1898.
Maria Conceicao was born in 1873 in Ribeiras, Pico. My grandparents moved to
Jamestown, RI abt 1900 & were on the RI census using the surname of
George/Jorge but later used the "Perry" surname.

Hi Pat,
Just curious as to where in Rhode Island you are from. I'm in Fall River and
Pereira was my grandparent's name.
