Vivian, The Caramujo is probably an " alcunha" a nickname. It means "snail" in Portuguese. These were used identify the many Manuels, Joses, Antonios, and Marias in an area where there were few surnames to tell them apart.
On the University of Minho site for Pico http://www.neps.ics.uminho.pt/ilhadopico.html I found the following in the concelho of Lajes: *Manuel José Flória * *Nascido a 11 de Dezembro de -1861 * *Falecido a 18 de Julho de -1942 * * * *Pais* *António José Mateus Flória* -1838--1909 *Luisa de Brum* -1839--1915 *Casamentos e filhos* * * *Casado* a 15 de Agosto de -1938 com *Maria de Lurdes* -1892 *Casado* a 28 de Janeiro de -1883 com *Francisca de Jesus* -1861--1937, * tiveram* *José de Brum Martiniano* -1889 *Manuel ?* -1885 *Manuel ?* -1884--1884 This Manuel Jose Floria is his father, and his first wife Francisca de Jesus his mother. The record of your grandfather was not recorded there. You'll notice the two Manuels listed, it seemed a common practice that if a child died young, the parents would use the name on future children. My ancestors on Flores have three baptisms for Jose, and all died young. If you go to the site above and search around, you'll find that Francisca de Jesus's parents are in fact Martiano de Brum and Francisca de Jesus. You should be able to build quite a family tree from there. My ggg grandfather Jose Silveira Soares was also from Lajes das Pico. I have some very distant Brum relatives.
