Charlene,
These are middle names, often but not always, with a religious significance.
Other examples include "de Jesus", "da Conceicao" (of the conception referring?
probably to the immaculate conception) just to list a couple that come to mind.
There was a time that many women used such a name (ie Maria da Conceicao)?their
whole lives never taking a surname, not even their father's or their husband's
when they married.

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Names on Records

In reading the films of the Azores, I come across several women who
have as part of their names "das Dores" or "do Carmo".

Are these last names or are they middle names as on records the
females father's name is usually not given?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Charlene
