Ponte66, Yes, there are orphan records, if indeed he was an orphan. I doubt that the orphan records are 100% complete, though. Before going that route, I'd get the baptisms of his children. Depending on when these children were born in Terceira, the baptism will say that the baby is the child of the father and the mother AND the paternal grandchild of X & Y. It will say the same thing for the maternal side. This will confirm or deny the orphan story that you have. Depending on the time period again, you can order these from your local Family History Center (FHC). More info can be obtained here: http://homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/HowTo.html
As for cemeteries on Sao Miguel and Terceira, I would guess that there would be almost 1 per freguesia. On Sao Miguel, that would be in the 60s. On Terceira that would be around 30. If you are after a tombstone though, you probably won't find one. Being an island, most graves are reused after 7 years or so. The family would have to pay continually on the grave to allow it to remain. I don't think many families had the financial means to do that in the past (I don't know when they started to allow some graves to remain. I know my great-grandmother's sister is still interred and that her family continually pays on her grave so it is not reused). -- Cheri Mello Listowner, Azores-Gen Researching: Vila Franca, Ponta Garca, Ribeira Quente, R. das Tainhas, Achada --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ To unsubscribe from this group, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Follow the confirmation directions when they arrive.
