Hi Maria,
I don't know as yet where the Maciel comes from. I have seen the Maciel
references from that region while searching google before. My great grandmother
was Francisca Herminia (her father was a Ferreira). She was from Faial. Her
husband and my great grandfather was Estacio Vieira Maciel and he was from
Pico, Azores. Their son, my grandfather, Estacio Vieira Maciel (later Estacio
Maciel Ferreira) was from Pico.
I do go to Portugal quite often and will be there for Christmas and New Year.
As my husband spends most of his time in Portugal on a golf course I think
I will investigate the train transport and see if I can visit Viana do Castelo.
I believe it is up near Porto.
Thanks for the tip. You never know, it may end up my Maciel's are from there
originally.

What a beautiful story. Do you know where your Maciel family comes from? In
Viana do Castelo in the north of mainland Portugal, the surname of Maciel is
strong. There is a Maciel museum and a statute in the middle of a plaza of
Maciel. Just curious.
