Hi Elaine,
Lucky sister you have to have a huge, bearing fig tree.....the reason we go to
Pico in August is the figs.....in the area where our adega is there are
ancient, incredibly shaped fig trees. By the 2nd week of August the figs are
huge, fragrant oozing sweetness. The canaries and the blackbird(can't remember
its name) love to eat them and sometimes when you reach over your head to pick
them they look perfect from the bottom and are all eaten on the top....a funny
feeling in the hand!
The Escola do Artesenato in Santo Amaro uses them to make preserves that they
sell in the store of the school. They also use the orange crop in the winter
for preserves. Needless to say I do my share in bringing the preserves back
home. When we are there they are so abundant that my neighbor has 2 old giant
trees and picks at least 2 5 gallon buckets every other day and she brings us
more than we can consume! She also taught us how to eat them....we were eating
the skins and all but they peel the skins. She makes many different things with
the figs she harvests.
The first year we were there we didn't have a stove in the adega and we had a
type of barbque cooker that I was able to make a fig cake with some over ripe
ones..what a treat. Now I just cook them down and use them on pancakes and
other ways.
Here in Arkansas it's too cold to have much luck with them outside....I have a
tree I planted 5 years ago that grows great each summer and the first hard
freeze kills it back to the ground. I have not figured out a way to overwinter
it outside so that it will bear fruit!

Now dreaming of figs.....
Nancy
