I have often walked from one end to the other. If walking isn't something you want to do, you can always "contract" with a cabby to pick you up at a hotel and bring you back from a designated pick up point at a prearranged time. I don't know your age or health status but I'm 57 and I could walk from the park to the Avenida. There are many hotels closer, but if you have no reservation by now the likelihood of finding a hotel in Ponta Delgada is not good. Keep in mind that the city's normal 25,000 population has 100,000 people at the festas, including immigrants from Canada, Bermuda, Brazil, the US, the other islands and continental Portugal.
