I am trying to find info on Emanuel Sward (Soares, Swartz, Schwartz) not sure how he spelt his name before he changed it to Sward. Emanuel was said to be born on 16th May 1852 on Sao Jorge, Western Islands, Portugal.
Some stories say he was apparently sent to America by his mother to avoid having to go to war. When he arrived in America he found his brother was dead. He returned to Sao Jorge. On the 18th September 1870 at the age of 18 he illegally entered Australia after deserting an Amercian Whaling Bark called 'Matilda Sears'. He married Mary Ann Lovegrove on 14th Sept 1875 and they had 11 children the eldest named John Emanuel Sward. They lived in Tasmania. Emanuel died 12th Jan 1918. Because he seemingly changed his name on entering Australia it has been difficult to find any birth records on Emanuel. If anybody knows any info on perhaps siblings of Emanuel or his parents names - anything really - I would really appreciate the help.
