I've been helping someoen with research on a family not all that far away. Name was Francis, but on her marriage record the sister of atleast one of them was listed as Silva.
I understand that among people of the Azores and Portugal, people can have four or more surnames, and daughters often use different surnames than sons. Manuel (Emanuel) and Mary ann Francis Bandura (which was a name they adopted around 1880) came from Fayal; their parents were Andrew F Bandura and Rosaria. They were both born around 1828. They lived in Boston for a time and may have lived elsewhere. No record of the birth of the first child of Manuel Francis has been positively identified. She married Antoine Joseph from Lisbon, Portugal, in 1853. He married Mary Joseph the daughter of "Jodo Quaretmo Jose" and Anna de Jesus, of Pico, Azores. In Boston. Atleast that appears to be the same couple. They settled down in Cohasset, Norfolk county, Massachusetts, near the southern end of Massachusetts Bay, not far from Plymouth. An Antoine Francis Bandura, b about 1836, lived in Cohasset near Mary and Manuel, and also started out with the surname Francis that morphed into Francis or F. Bandura. If you even could be researching the same family, I'd really like ot exchange information. Silva and Francis (Frank) are common names, but when they appear together it could conceivably mean something. I have been trying to research my Portuguese roots with little to no lucky. My Grandfather was a ship builder in Plymouth named Frank Jesse (Jacintho?). He married Francis Nunes de Silva. I have the Ellis island report of my Grandfather coming to the US (twice) but am having no luck with my Grandmother. My GGrandfather was also Frank (Francisco?) Jesse (Jacintho?). His wife was Jacintha Jacintho (maiden name same as married name). Both Franks came from San Miguel, and Francis came from Pico. My mother always said her mother had a sister in California. Can anyone help me with my research? --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ To unsubscribe from this group, send email to [email protected].
