Hi Mary, Once you get into the Portuguese records you will see the Portuguese spellings, so you might want to keep these handy. Manoel = Manuel Ingnatio = Inacio Fortado = Furtado Mary = Maria Anton = Antonio Fayal = Faial Joseph = Jose
You will have to pick on the person who left the best paper trail in America. That's usually the person who went through naturalization. If not, you can always get the Alien Registration papers if the person lived in 1940. You may have to trace some or all of the siblings, looking for the village/freguesia that they came from in Faial. You will have to look in many places and order many documents (I found mine on the 25th try).
