Dear Fellow Listers

Seeing the questions on first/last names reminded me that the Portuguese
Paleography booklet is online on Kathy Cardoza's Website:

www.homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/azoresindex.html

For those of you just starting out you need to download the Genealogical Word
List and don't forget the Paleography! The Paleography booklet has much more
than just handwriting samples; there are 4 or 5 examples of each letter of the
alphabet and also documents to translate along with a very important list of
GIVEN names and also SURNAMES of the Azores, Madeira and Portugal. If you are
serious about learning to read the Portuguese records you need these two
documents and also a good Portuguese/English Dictionary. I purchases mine
several years ago at Furtado's Imports in San Jose California. I have two,
Port/Eng and Eng/Port and they were $50 each at the time but well worth the
cost.

The Paleography booklet also gives some of the abbreviations that are used
along with the most common Latin phrases used in the Church Records.

Hope this helps out the "newbies".
