Trevor, My grandfather was an 'off the grid' guy, and , he ended up working on my grandmother's uncle's sheep ranch on the Oregon/Idaho border, where he met and married my grandmother (they ran away to get married, devastating Uncle Mielke). She was German/Prussian. His brother married a Basque woman. However, their nephew went back to Sao Jorge married a much younger girl from the islands, returned to Idaho and married her again here in the USA.
So, your question actually raises more questions, such as, how many Portuguese married 'outside' the tribe? I think there is a lot of intermarriage between Portuguese and Basque around Idaho, Oregon and Nevada--though I don't know for sure--just a guess. My cousin in Nevada ended up with a Basque man as did a couple of her daughters, I think. OIther family experiences may be different.
