Joao,  Thank you for this explanation.  There indeed was a Luzia far back on
my grandfather's side.  I will now have to check and see if I find a Luzia,
Lucia, Lucilla or Lucila on my grandmother's side as well.  Interesting that
they should decide to pass this name down as a middle name some 10 or so

Lucille, from Latin Lucilla, is Lucila in standard Portuguese (variant with
double L is common); Lucilla is derived of Lucia, a kind of diminutive, but
it's a different name, like Luciola, Luciana, Lucina, Lucinda, all from same
root Luc-, Latin lux "light" , Lucia's Portuguese older form was Luzia.
