        Aloha again Jacki G.

I don't know which island the ships landed. My guess would be Oahu
first then some were taken to other islands. Two sets of my great-grandparents
eventually landed on Maui. But my Oliveira great grandparents went to Kauai
before Maui. Have you tried contacting The Portuguese Genealogical &
Historical Society of Hawaii?

Here is what it says about the Steamship Monarch in "The Portuguese in
Hawaii" by John Henry Felix, Ph.D. (out of print)
#7. Steamship Monarch (British) arrived Sept 15, 1882, 57 days out
from St. Michael (Sao Miguel), Azores, with 202 men, 197 women, 458 children.

          Mahalo Iris

That does help. It gives me an approximate year of birth for Luiz and
Jose. I haven't been able yet to find Luiz on any census and I didn't know that
Jose existed before two days ago.

Do you know if that would that be the island of Ohau where they
arrived?

          Thank you

                Aloha Jacki,
This is what I have on page 220:

#204 Fernandes, Luiz age 40. Arrived Hawaii on the Monarch in
1882 from Sao Miguel.
With wife Roza de Jesus age 25.
Children: Manoel (no age) and Jose 4months.

                Hope this helps Jacki.

                  Iris,

If you have time, I would greatly appreciate you looking up
Luiz and Roza Fernandes and their son Manuel and possibly another son Jose. I
found an index card for them in June of 1882 on the SS Monarch but have been
unable to find the actual manifest. I am pretty sure that this is my g great
grandfather Manuel Fernandes and his parents and brother. If I could find more
info about them, I could be more sure. According to Roza's death cert and the
info from one of the census' she immigrated somewhere between 1880 and 1885
with her husband and at least one son. She was born Jan 1859 and her son was
born Aug 1878. I don't know any dates for Luiz.

                  Thank you

Speaking of Ships Records, I have a book called
"Portuguese Immigrants to Hawaii". Compiled by Edgar C. Knowlton, Jr. 1993.
If anyone has names you want me to look up, let me know.

                          Jacki,

Pd. is not a code for that column. It's PA (Pa) for
Papers filed, NA (Na) for Naturalized, and AL (Al) for Alien.

Can you say where you found your ancestor on the 1930
so another pair of eyes can take a look?

You didn't have to be a citizen to have Social
Security.
