My grandfather, Miguel Seriqui chased a lady named Maria Rocha to Boston. They
married in 1878. It was her second marriage and his first. They both said
they were from Fayal although we always thought Miguel was born in Terceira.
They had a daughter Maria Sereque in 1881 in Boston. We were always told that
she died, yet there is no record of her death in the Massachusetts Vital
Records. One of this group's members told me that Miguel was in Fayal in 1886
but I can't find anymore out about that trip. Now I wonder if Maria Rocha went
back to the Azores and took baby Maria with her. Did she die there and that's
why Miguel was in Fayal then? Does anyone have any information on a Maria
Rocha who would have been at least ten years older than Miguel (maybe born in
the late 1840s?).
Thanks in advance-

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Naming Traditions of the Azores

Hi Everyone

Cheri Mello and I have put together a new document, "Naming Traditions of Our
Azorean Ancestors". It is on the Azores GenWeb site at
http://homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/naming.html. Hopefully this
article will prove to be helpful to many of you newer researchers. The article
includes information on:

Method of choosing surnames
Female surnames and/or religious names
Variant spellings
Use of da, de, do, das, dos, and d'
Miscellaneous "rules", often broken rules
