Have you checked to see if he was a naturalized citizen of either NZ or
Australia? It might have his place of birth listed. Also, have you found the
birth records on all of his and Louisa's children and their baptismala
records? It they were still Catholic the place of John's birth may be listed
on their baptismal records and also on his marriage record (church) to
Louisa.

Hi, I'm looking for information about John INNIS who was born in
Faial, 1830.
Parents; John INNIS and Louisa Constance.
John married in New Zealand in 1851 and died in Australia, 1914.
We believed he was of Scotish or British descent, but are now thinking
he may have been Portuguese.
We have been led to believe his name would have been Joao INACIO if he
was Portuguese.
