I excited to let everyone know that I received this email and discovered that Carmen Bem who sent this is my cousin!! I found Suzanne Carreiro, who made this connection, from this group three years ago. Suzanne's gggrandmother, Maria da Assuncao de Sousa Caloura m. Jose Borges and my gggrandfather, Antonio de Sousa Caloura m. Jacinta Amelia were siblings. Carmen has now filled in more of the puzzle on my father's maternal de Sousa's line. Her gggrandfather Manuel (Cardao-? nickname) m. Maria de Gloria Pacheco (see below) was also a sibling in that family. There are two brothers left, Jacinto and Jose that we do not know as yet, but have hope since we have found three out of five within three years. I do know that Jacinto is from New York and Jose is from Connecticut, but that's all. Oh yes, Carmen is from Toronto. Isn't technology grand! The priest she is referring to is Padre Antonio de Sousa Rocha, my father's first cousin. He resides in Ribeira Grande at 87. He also communicates with Gaby Gaultney from this line who I connected with also. Padre Antonio Rocha parents were Merces de Sousa (my grandmother's sister) and Manuel de Silva Rocha. Manuel was the son of Jose da Silva Rocha and Maria do Espirito Santo/Raposa. He married Maria Jeronima Cabral daughter of Antonio Manuel Cabral and Jeronima Julia de Medeiros/Galego. He was from Estrela, Ribeira Grande and she was from Conceicao, Ribeira Grande. Gaby's mother Francelina de Silva Rocha was the daughter of Manuel Rocha and Maria Cabral. Gaby resides in CT. I have more on that line because of Gaby's wonderful family chart that she was so great to send me if anyone is interested. I asked Carmen about her name Bem since that doesn't seem like a common Portuguese surname. She said that her brothers did a family tree on the Bem's and that her father was from Pico but descended from Hungary. She also states there are Bem's from Poland and Italy as well though. Isn't that facinating. It's so exciting to find your relatives on line and connect. Linda Borges (Furtado) Norton
Hi Linda, I was given your e-mail address by Suzanne Carreiro. My name is Carmen Bem and I live in Canada. Lately, my mother and my aunt (her sister) have been talking a lot about her family that immigrated to the US in the early 1900s. In fact we came accross a newspaper clipping of an obituary for May Ida Sousa (90) from Bristol, RI, who my mother says is her first cousin. Mary Ida Sousa is the daughter of the late Uriel Sousa. She is survived by one brother William P. Sousa of Bristol and was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters; Mary Silveira, Joseph Sousa, Uriel Sousa Jr, Mary Alice Sousa, Anthony Sousa, Mary Emily Oliveira, James Uriel Sousa. My late grandmother, Maria Jose de Sousa Calouro was the late Uriel Sousa's sister. They were born in R. Seca da R. Grande in Sao Miguel. Their mother was Marida da Gloria Pacheco and father Manuel Cardao. That we know of, there is a priest in Sao Miguel that is still related to the Sousa family that my mother communicates with. In e-mailing with Suzanne I found out that we have a connection. Some of her family members are related to the Sousa Calouro side of the family. Perhaps you might be related too...wouldn't that be great? I have just begun researching and I'm so fascinated with this. If you think there is a connection I would love to hear from you.
