I found Manuel Galante in Portuguese Immigrants to Hawaii. But this one arrived in Hawaii in 1883 which is probably a mistake because the begining of the book says 1884. 105. Galante, Manuel da Costa age 27 arrive Hawaii on The Alberldie 1883 (1884) from the Azores with wife, Maria Violante age 20. Iris

My ggg grandmother's brother, Manuel da Costa Galante, from Lagoa, N.S. immigrated with his new bride to Hawaii in 1884 upon the ALBERGELDIE(think thats right). His passport along with information from a book Ms. Shirley has stated his whole name as that which is above. Now my problem is I have searched all the subsequent census records up to 1910 in Hawaii, and I can not find any one with that last name, Galante. Does anyone have any ideas of an alternative spelling of the last name, or maybe if it would be usual for one to drop the last name and just go by "da Costa"??
