It could very well be marrane. It's hard to read the ending letter (or two!). I 
would look for other baptismal records of his children and see if it comes any 
clearer or maybe another priest's handwriting will be clearer!

  I tend to agree with JR but the problem is that at that time there are no 
trade/job descriptions on the records.  I will note is as mariante, for now.
    
   "marrane" is the early portuguese word for new christians.
