Newport, RI – Sophia (Galante) Dias, 90, of 9 Bradford Avenue, Newport, RI, died Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center, Newport, RI. She was the wife of the late Elias B. Dias. Born in New Bedford, MA on May 13, 1912 she was the daughter of the late Antonio M. and Alexandrina (Tavares) Galante. Mrs. Dias volunteered for 20 years at the Maher Center in Middletown and she also was a volunteer at the Forest Farm Health Care Center and the Grand Islander Health Care Center leading a prayer group through Jesus Saviour Church. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the Rosary Sodality of Jesus Saviour Church. Mrs. Dias was a communicant of Jesus Saviour Church. She is survived by her son Elias B Dias Jr. of Effingham, NH, her daughters Natalie D Colello of Providence, RI, Eileen D Pierson of Newport, RI, , her sisters Maria G Botelho eight grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She is preceded in death by her daughter Kathleen D. Mather and her sister Sidonia G. Braga. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday April 7, 2010 at _8:00 am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00am in Jesus Saviour Church, Broadway and Vernon Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday April 6, 2010, from 5-8 pm., in the funeral home.
