This is a question best answered by John M Raposo, since I do not
recall the periods in question. But to my knowledge, this was never a
real barrier to marrying. It is more a case, that most people just
wanted to observe their religious duties if they could. Moreover,
since most could not read, they did not know what the priest wrote,
though certainly if they observed the faith, they would know if
something was not quite right.
