Thanks Joao for all of the information.....I'm always amazed when you bring
forth these tidbits of information like that about Joana's daughter Isabel
having a baby out of wedlock then marrying her father's (Antonio was her
father?) brother 5 years later. How do you even remember that you have this
information? Did the son, Jose, take his new fathers name or use that of his
mother? I'd like to research the Abreu family in Flamengos since I had no idea
I had Fayal ancestors and now this Quadros line on Sao Jorge!
I appreciate your help these last few years since your information about my
Baptista family brought forth many, many discoveries with the help of Arline
and others!

Best regards,

Nancy Jean

Before 1800s, the regular Portuguese surname form (maternal+paternal) was not
the standard form. We can find any combination: maternal+paternal,
paternal+maternal, only paternal, only maternal, grandparents's surnames.
There's usually surnames in honor to grandparents or uncles/aunts. It's very
common to repeat the name of grandmothers, for example. For example, I have an
ancestor Apolonia Dias Pereira in Sao Roque/Pico, and she had many
granddaughters Apolonia Dias Pereira, who had homonym granddaughters, making
this name cross many generations intact.
After 1800s there's very few examples of children receiving godparents'
surnames.

Antonio de Quadros born in Flamengos, Faial, son of Domingos de Abreu and Luzia
Gularte, married to Joana da Ressurreicao daughter of Joao Pereira de Quadros
and Mariana Machado. Joana had a daughter Isabel de Sao Joao, who had son Jose
born in Urzelina on 26-mar-1749 (unknown father) and later got married on
25-may-1754 (Velas) to Inacio Teixeira Machado, Antonio de Quadros's brother.

Hi Nancy,

I read:

Antonio de Quadros son of Domingos Habreo & LuZia Gularte naturals of Ribeira
dos Flamengos, Nossa Senhora da Luz, Fayal.

Joana da Ressurreição daughter of João de Quadros "Pereira" The P.ra is short
form and could be something either than Pereira, perhaps someone else in the
group will be able to confirm, & Maria Machado of Beira, Santa Anna, S. Jorge.

It does not make reference of consanguinity (blood relation).

Best,

Margaret Vicente.

Greetings all,

I've spent a quiet , rainy weekend researching my mothers maternal and
paternal lines simultaneously since the records are intermingled time wise in
Velas. I've had some measure of success with some new discoveries. My Antonio
Jose de Sousa Pereira married Isabel de Jesus da Silveira...her father was my
ggggrandfather, Manuel de Avila Teixeira who was the son of Jose Antonio da
Silveira and Maria de Jesus, daughter of the other Manuel de Avila Teixeira and
Beatriz Maria. So he was named after his maternal grandfather of the same name.
Also, Jose was the son of Manuel Machado Fagundes and Joanna Baptista.....(this
makes me wonder if my parents are some kind of cousins way back there)....not
sure where his da Silveira came from. It would be impossible to trace these men
by surnames!

However, I need some help with a name on a record from my mothers maternal
side......I've just discovered that my de Lemos line has roots in Norte Grande
(Poderosa) and also back to Fayal! These people also used maternal surnames!
One of them is Quadros.

My ggrandmother, Francisca Rosa de Lemos was descended several generations
back from Joao Jose da Silveira and Anna Bernarda Poderosa, Joao Jose was the
son of Antonio (Alves?) de Quadros and Joanna Maria de Resurrecion......I need
help reading Antonio and Joannas marriage record.......

Velas marriages...1734 to 1772...page #116, record #676

Antonio is the son of Domingos de (HABREO?) and Luiza? Gularte from Rebeira,
Flamengos, Fayal !!!

(my first Fayal ancestor to date)

Joanna is the daughter of Joam de Quadros (abbreviated name?) and Maria Machado
of Velas (Beira)

Does anyone connect or know these people and could you please help me with the
names that I can't read on this record?

Thank you,
Nancy Jean Baptista
