What a treat I received in the mail today!! Marshall Machado sent me a copy of a scrap book his mother Dorothy Machado of Tranquillity, California made years ago. I wish more people would do this. Perhaps some of you can make a connection. I hope so.
Dorothy writes: "Your paternal grandparents, Maria and Joseph C. Machado, were immigrants, coming here from their native land, the Azore Islands. Your father and your Uncle, Manuel Machado, have supplied me with bits of information about their family that depict them as hard working, fine, upstanding people. You may be proud of your ancestors. I am happy to make this scrap book for you and hope you will enjoy it." Some of the information is: Joseph Cotta Machado was born April 20, 1869 on the Island of Terceira to Manuel and Elena Machado. He had three brothers and three sisters. At age 29 he married Maria Cardoza and had four children, Manuel, Cipriano, Marie and Jesuina. At the age of thirty-five in 1904 Joe went to Nevada where he found work milking cows for two years. He returned to Terra Cha for six months but work was so scarce he decided to go back to the United States. He went to California and found a job in a lumber mill in Sonora (Tuolumne County) and worked there about 5 years. His borther Manuel and two cousins, Manuel Martins and Frank Martins Machado were in Sonora at the time. Other names mentioned are Maria Jose Cardoza, her brother Manuel Cardoza, sister Delphina Cardoza Rocha, Jesuina Silveira Mendes, Dell Cardoza Rusconi and Adeline Cardoza Lombardini, Maria Dos Milagres who married Anthony Lewis, Elsie Bettensoli, Gene Ventura, Joseph Silveira. Dorothy stated: "It was not uncommon for several daughters of the same family to be named Marie or Mary and have a different middle name as in this family. Your grandmother was Maria Jose and her sister was Mary of the Miracles." Hope this is of help to someone. Fran Gardner -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to [email protected].
