Shirley, Since whaling was a trade, when they arrived here they may have continued working as whalers here. There were many shore whaling companies along the Califonia coast from the 1850s to 1900. I've seen census sheets that listed the settlement showing which island the azorean men were from. I think 1870 Monterey was the one I have. I'll look around
