Hi Joanne

I have never used PAF so can't really compare it to anything. I'm thinking, though, isn't PAF no longer supported for the Mac? I thought I read that somewhere. You can read Dick Eastman's reviews of different Mac programs here: http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2010/06/genealogy-programs-for-macintosh.html

I own MacFamily Tree 5 and even recently downloaded the version 6 Beta. There are some things I like about it, namely charts and reports but there are many more things I do not like. Although the interface is quite interesting and the visual chart of individuals is fun, I think the navigation system is clunky at best and makes it difficult to move from person to person if they are in different places in your database. I also do not like the way Sources are entered and recorded. I really did try to like the program, but just couldn't. It feels to me like the good start for a nice program .... in the future. But, my opinion is that it is not nearly as full featured as others.

You did not mention Reunion, which is what I use. There are several programs to choose from these days for we Mac users but Reunion 9 is generally thought to be the most well thought out and implemented of the lot, making it the most popular of the Mac offerings. Although it is expensive at $99, it is a fabulous program and would be worth a look by you.

At any rate, most all of the programs allow you to download a demo version for free so that you can try it out. I would recommend doing that for whichever programs you might want to try. Give them a "test spin" and see which one suits your needs the best.

If you need more info or clarification on anything, I'd be happy to help more.

Good luck,
Kathy

Even though I am mostly silent, I read and study everything that goes on here on the list. To that end, I have a questions for the Mac users - would you recommend MacFamily Tree instead of PAF for recording genealogy? I'm preview it at present but don't want to switch unless it will make it easier or less cumbersome for me. Feel free to tell it like it is!

Thanks!
