I am reposting this with some corrections to it. List of Azorean participants in an expedition to
New Holland (Australia) to look for Gold. They left S. Miguel in 28 July 1853 aboard the English boat “Water Lily”. The trip took 108 days. They arrived on the 13th November. The expedition landed in Geelong, main port of Por-Philip, a town as big as Ponta Delgada in the 19th century. Then they took a ship to Melbourn and from there they went to Fores Crick mines. The adventure was not profitable for them. The investors had a very big loss. João de Sousa Dourado, from Ponta Graça, was one of the feww who profited from. For a long period of time he received interest on the money he invested there. Jacinto António dos Reis married there and succeded in Melbourn. They were a well knownand very considered family there. Commander and ship owner was Mr. John Busk (he had his wife and little daughter on board).
