Continuing with Bras da Costa and Margarida Furtado, I wish to point out that sometimes the marriage records or vice versa, the baptism records, are not always accurate. Thus one sometimes finds that a given marriage record may state that someone is a native or resident of Maia, but a baptism may state the same person is actually baptised in Povoacao and their parents may be from yet another village. So this is what happened to our ancestors, Shirley and me. I have the following information which indicates more precisely where our ancestors came from.
In Povoacao, Maria is bap- June 3, 1702, filha de Mel da Roe e Maria Lourenco, Padrinhos are Bras da Costa filho de Antonio Machado todos moradores nas Furnas fraguesia de ES Maya. (Mel da Roe is brother of Bras da Costa and Francisco Machado) Margarida is bap- Feb 9-1685, filha de Fco Rabello e Maria Furtada, Pad- Po de Almeida e Maria Furtada fa de Anto de Oliveira >From Shirley's notes, we have: SA- GODPARENTS Francisco Machado, single, son of (Antonio Machado X Maria da Roe) resident Furnas; and _______ada Oliveira daughter of (Francisco Rebello, deceased X Maria Furtada) resident Povoacao. Francisco Machado is the brother of both Bras da Costa and Manuel da Roe. Notice that daughter of Fco Rebelo later married Bras da Costa. This is why they appear in the baptisms of each others children. So I conclude, and there are other records to reinforce this conclusion, that they are all brothers as stated. I believe Antonio Machado and Maria da Roe married in Fenais da Ajuda (FVC), and all but Bras were born in FVC. Bras was born in Povoacao, as it turns out, indicating that at this point Antonio Machado and Maria da Roe travelled to Povoacao. Eventually they went to and settled in Furnas, where they found work or had a connection to some land to work on. But most people in Furnas were workers and it was a new frontier at the time, the last and most difficult to develop in Sao Miguel, as I understand it. Anyway, that's the way I see it. I am sorry if for some reason, Shirley, you did not get this information, but I remember sending it, or I may have forgotten. Very sorry. I very much appreciate your hard work and our collaborative efforts over the years.
