Hi Joy,

I am no expert but in my research I have found that many
people hold information back due to feeling ashamed of what will come out of
the closet. These people are not really doing genealogy and only hinder the
process. History is what ever it is, and history books should not give false
information or be diluted because the truth offends someone. Genealogy in my
opinion should be none judgmental. In most if not all families you will find
those things considered upsetting, but they are the truth. Many “Brick Walls”
could have doors put into them if people simply eliminated the shame and
judgmental
factors. I am glad you want to do genealogy, so let’s see where we go from
here. I am very happy to know you and Lionel. I have attached a picture of Dot
and I, as well as that of Jose Henriques Silveira, taken from a locket worn by
my paternal grandmother Eduarda Henriques Silveira his daughter, a picture of
my great- grandmother Inacia Florinda, who was his housekeeper, they never
married but Jose Henriques was acknowledged legally for all the children he had
with her in a Perfilhicao Document, and lastly a picture of Dona Carlotta’s
headstone is also attached. If you send me a copy of your genealogy report
directly to my e-mail address, I will then send you both my father’s Ancestry
and Descendants Reports.

I do have three individuals named Agostinho Silveira in my
files so far.

Agostinho Silveira married to Maria Inacia. on
Nov 13, 1806 both born and married
in Santissima Trindade, Capelo, Faial. Maria is my 1st cousin 5
times removed.

2.
Agostinho Silveira born Aug 15, 1733, married to
Rosa Maria born Sep 22, 1737 both born in Santa Barbara, Cedros, Faial, but
married Feb 17, 1760 in Nossa Senhora do Rosario, Topo, Sao Jorge. Agostinho is
my 4th cousin 5 times removed. Rosa is my 2nd cousin 7
times removed and also my wife’s 4th cousin 6 times removed.

3.
Agostinho Raulino Silveira born Dec 21, 1869
married to Mariana Luisa born Dec 19, 1872 they married on Jul 30, 1910 in
Ribeira Seca, Sao Jorge
where they both were born. Mariana Luisa is my 12th cousin 4 times
removed and also my wife’s 11th cousin 4 times removed.

 Best Regards

Hi Emil, I am very, very new to all these names which have
been appearing on and off on Azores websites. I was so grateful for your
reply and to know that I may be getting closer to zoning in on my family
line. I was aware that to mention an illigitimate child on the
website might be dealing with a sensitive area and I did not want to offend
anyone but it is very difficult to research a relative when you don't have a
birthdate and don't know the parent's names. The fact that he was a
Catholic Priest seemed the only identifying fact that might lead me to find my
answers. From the dates you have supplied below I think
there is a strong possibility that my Agostinho Silveira may be the"Spanish
Priest" in your family files. I had always thought Agostinho was born
around 1790. My grandfather, Ernst Reye (a German who married Margaretta
Betham, daughter of Anna Betham and granddaughter of Augustine
Silveira) who was secretary to the Governor of Samoa when it was a German
Colony wrote in a letter that Augustine Silveira came from the island of
Faial. I thought that meant he was born on the Island of Faial but
it also might mean he boarded a whaling ship from Faial or that he might
have been working there. Yes, I did know that Jose Henriques da Silveira had
a second wife and that he named his first daughter, Carlotta after his
first wife. I attach a picture of myself and my husband,
Lionel Hughes, so you know who you are communicating with and also attach a
photo of Agostinho Silveira's grave. I would love to find out
more about members and dates on your family tree. I know I can't
claim them as mine until I can prove the connection beyond all
doubt. A very grateful friend,Joy Hughes100 Dillons Lane,Alstonville, NSW

Jose Henriques da Silveira's second wife, Ignacia Florinda da
Silva, is the sister of Manuel Pereira da Silva who is my husband,
Bob's, great-grandfather. You knew that, Emil, I don't know if Joy
        knew it.

Hi Joy,
It appears that you have located my documentation somewhere of
my great-grandfather Jose Henriques Silveira and his wife Dona
Carlota
Joaquina Alcantara e Silveira. She was also his first cousin. They
married after Jose Henriques returned to Faial in 1863 from a 29-year
tour of service in Brazil. He had been involved in silver mining and
the export of Mahogany and other fine woods while there. Dona Carlota
Joaquina Alcantara was
born Jun 15, 1818 in Sao Salvador, Horta, Faial. She also died there
on Apr 08, 1882. Her mother, my 2nd great- grandaunt, was
Francisca Joaquina born Feb 13, 1796 and died Jul 29, 1868 in Santa
Catarina, Castelo Branco, Faial. Francisca Joaquina had Dona Carlota
Joaquina after an affair with a Calholic Priest. He appears now to
have possibly been your great-great grandfather, Agostinho Silveira.
Everything else seems to fit my family’s account of the story. My
family account did reflect that he was a Spanish Priest , but I
believed this to be inaccurate, no one really knew who he was.

Many thanks Cheri for your quick
          reply. I
actually have quite a lot of information on the
          descendants of Augustine
(Agostinho) Silveira and have a photo of
his grave after visiting Samoa in July
this year but the big
problem is getting information prior to his arrival in

Samoa.
My great great grandfather was
          Augustine
(Agostinho) SILVEIRA. I guess he was born around
          1880s or 1890s. He
was a Catholic Priest on Faial, Azores
(and possibly Flores as well) but
left the priesthood and
took a job on a whaling ship for possibly 7 yrs then in
1840s
jumped ship at Lotofaga, Upolu, Samoa. He married in March 1852
          the
paramount chief"s (Matafa Iosefa) niece, Maria

Malaisala. Her father was High Chief Tusani
          Malaisala.

Augustine and Maria (or Mary)
          Silveira had 6
children all born in Samoa. The names were as
          follows:1. Manuel Silveira born
          Mar 18 1848
married Caroline Scanlon (descendants moved to
          NZ and USA)2. Catherine "Anna"
          Silveira born June 25
1853, married Capt Montgomery Betham
          (descendants moved to NZ, Australia,
Germany, &
          USA)3. Joseph Silveira born
          1885 died
18564. Joseph Silveira born
          18575. Mary Silveira born
          1862
married ? Kopsch & lived in Leipzig
          Germany6. Luisa Silveira born
          1865 married Samuel
Kronfeld and lived in NZ (descendants
          moved mostly to NZ)
Sometime after living in Samoa
          the family changed
their surname to de Silva as Agostinho
          nominated my great grandfather, Capt
Montgomery Betham (husband of
          Catherine "Anna" Silveira) as executor
of his will
and Agostinho signed his name "de Silva" at this

time.
While the following isn't
          proved, it seems
Augustine (Agostinho) had an illigitimate child
          and this daughter probably
was Dona Carlota Joaquina De
Alcantara who was born 15.6.1818 in Horta, Faial
and orphaned by
her mother and Spanish Priest father. She was given to be

raised by parishioners Francisco Joaquina and his wife Rosa
          Joaquina. They
appeared to be her uncle and aunt. She
signed her name Carlota Joaquina de
Alcantara e Silveira when
married to Jose Henriques da Silveira born
18.6.1821.The headstone of her grave in
          the new
cemetery, Carmo, Horta, Faial, Azores (Grave V-100)
          reads, "D
Carlotta Joaquim Gutieirez Silveira born June
          15 1848, died 8 April 1882.
She and her husband had no
          children.
My questions are:
1. Does anyone see any
          connection to the
names Agostinho Silveira, Dona Carlota Joaquina
          De Alcantara, Francisco
Joaquina, Rosa
          Joaquina. or Jose
Henriques da Silveira?
2. At what age did Azorean
          men generally join
the Catholic priesthood? If Agostinho was
born in Faial, Azores, would he
be called a Spanish

Priest?
3. I would dearly love to
          find out
Augustine's (Agostinho) birthdate, parents &
          siblings. I just do not
know where to turn next in my
search. Can anyone suggest where I could go
next? I
really can't get details from his death in Samoa.
Regards,Joy Hughes
