"[Ricardo] Rebelo, who is of Azorean descent, has also been working on
another documentary. He recently traveled to the islands of his
ancestry to document the difficulties that the Azorean people faced in
a film called 'Island of My Dreams.' The 60-minute piece highlights
why these islanders came to the United States.

"Although the islands were lush in semi-tropical fauna, life for the
inhabitants, explained the cinematographer, was excruciatingly
difficult. Rebelo noted that the impoverished island inhabitants, most
of whom didn't travel more than seven miles from their homes,
'couldn't eat beautiful scenery,' so they voyaged to a new, hopefully
better life across the Atlantic Ocean. The film, funded by University
of the Azores in connection with the Luso-American Development
Foundation, will air on PBS in March of next year."
