Repost for Joy Hughes hughes1943 at dodo.com.au
I have been very impressed with the helpfulness of List Members and their
willingness to share. It certainly isn't easy tracing Azorean
ancestors when they don't have consistant surnames.
I would like information on one of my ancestors (who was born probably end
of 1700's of early 1800s) and would really appreciate help on any of the
questions listed below.
Wikipedia says, "Horta became a stopover for Jesuit missionaries travelling
to and from Brazil & Asia. The Jesuits constructed a College
in Horta as did the Carmelites and Franciscan Orders" (presumably between
1672 & 1822).
I have a recent picture of a Sacred Art Museum that used to be a Convent at
Horta, Faial, Azores.
Question 1 Does this Catholic College still exist today and would this
Sacred Art Museum be the same building or College that the Jesuits
constructed ?
Question 2 Would anyone know the buildings these three orders used ?
Question 3 Were priests given a name change when they became priests? ( I
am particularly interested in the early to middle 1800s)
Question 4 How long did it take to train to become a priest and what was
involved?
Question 5 As the "de genere" (paperword process required of prospective
priests in which they needed to submit a listing of a
couple of generations of family members) has not been put
on line on the CCA website yet, would anyone know where
these records are presently kept and whether I would be
able to contact this place for information on ancestors. I would
like to know to which order of priests my ancestor
belonged and the names of his parents.
Regards,
Joy
