New Year's Resolutions for the Portuguese Researcher 1) When using acronyms, the author of the post will spell out the entire phrase on the initial post and follow it by the acronym in parenthesis. Example: Vila Franca do Campo (VFC). We have new comers to the list all the time and they don't know the abbreviations.
2) Santa Maria island and São Miguel island will NEVER be abbreviated as SM. 3) The islands with saints names will not be called St. Mary, St. Michael, or St. George. No one ever posts that their ancestors came from Third. Newcomers are exempt. It's a pain searching the archives when people on this list have the same names. Too many results are returned. 4) With now over 800 people on this list, it would be great if people would sign their first and last names, but first name and last initial are good too. 4) The Internet is only the tip of the iceberg. There is much, much more online today, but research still needs to be done in libraries and archives too. 5) To do Portuguese research, one needs to learn to deal with the handwriting. Make it one of your resolutions. There are tips on the Azores GenWeb and Family Search too. Yes, it is hard. Many of us had to go over that learning curve. Make a try at it and post what you extract out of the document. On the next document, try, try again. For ALL researchers: All of our genealogy data, photos, etc, will have a backup on an external hard drive, with an online service or something! Terrible losing all that work!
