Elaine, I just had a thought, have you checked the newspapers that are online on the CCA site? Perhaps there is an ad for them doing the Circus in a specific town/island that would give you a clue as to where they are at a certain time? I found a birth for Teotino in Horta (Matriz) listing Antonio and Romana in 1881 with their parent names but no marriage date(Uminho site). So you know that they were in Faial in 1881.
If you go to the CCA site and click on "arquivo digital" then scroll to the bottom and click on the blue addy: http://arquivodigital.uac.pt it will take you to the screen that has four choices to the right. I can't get the page to load right now and I can't remember which one to click on to get to the newspapers (I think it's the 3rd one down!). Just an idea since you haven't a clue as to where they were performing.
