Linda, what is it you're looking for on Mary (Pimentel) Carvalho?
If you think this genealogy is difficult, you should see the nightmare
involved in researching Native American ancestry. Not only were
surnames changed but entire identities. Early Indian baptisms
consisted of only the given name, no surnames, and the traditional
name given was erased. Also, we are finding that the priests would
sometimes list a person as 'white' after baptism, thus erasing any
Indian identity. It's an absolute nightmare. When surnames finally
were given, they were French names, further erasing the Indian identity.

Yes. I've been trying to get a record on my ggrandfather, Marianno Furtado
who supposedly is brother to Francisco Pimentel, Rick's ggrandfather. They
were siblings as your ggrandparents were siblings on the Carvalho side.
Rick and I have been on the group for years and I kept seeing his
information about his family from Ribeira Grande and I knew we were
connected somehow from his ggrandmother Maria Furtado. What we learned just
last year that my ggrandfather never carried the Pimentel name down, but
Rick found out on records that his grandfather came over with the Furtado
name on the ship manifest and that they had the same parents. Also Francisco
had a brother named Marianno which just made sense. Our grandparents were
first cousins generating from the female side.
Yes, we would be cousins since Maria Pimentel was Maria Furtado Teixeira
Pimentel and Manuel Furtado Teixeira Pimentel. Our ggrandparents were
siblings. Maria and Manuel were first cousins to my grandfather Antonio
Furtado.
It's amazing how many of us are probably related, but with family members
not carrying names down or changing names makes it much more difficult it is
to try to find relatives.
I'm trying to get my aunt and uncle, Marianno Furtado to find his
grandfather's information. I thought my dad had it, but I couldn't find it
when he passed away. My father never ever mentioned Pimentel so I was
shocked when I was finding this out. My father said his grandfather died
when he was young and didn't really remember him so that's probably one of
the reasons besides them never discussing past families.
Do you have any information on Mary Constance Pimentel?
I just met another cousin on line on my father's maternal side, Mike A. He
just recently joined the group. I've met four other cousins directly on line
as well. Isn't it incredible!
So, for now, I'm going to say you are possibly my fifth directly on line
besides all the other siblings.

Hi Linda,
I've read Rick's response to this. It does get confusing. My grandparents
are Mary Constance (Pimentel) and John George Carvalho.
They had an arranged marriage. My Dad, John was their 2nd oldest child, born
in 1915. So Rick's grandmother and my grandfather are siblings, and his
grandfather and my grandmother are siblings. So it looks like we three are
very related, although I would guess you are more our generation, yes?

Am I wrong Rick in saying that Mary Pimentel (your grandmother) m.
John Carvalho? If so, which would mean their children, Carvalho's are
my cousins as well being that they are Pimentel (Furtado's)?

Hi Joanne,
Now it looks like we may have a common ancestor. My Carvalho's are
from Bretanha and I do have some Medeiros in my line from there. If
your mother remembered Bella then she definitely knew the family.
The Carvalho Family was very large does your mother remember my great
uncle Manuel J. Carvalho? He was an opera singer and recorded a number
of records from 1917 to 1925. I have been try to locate his records I
have some but am always looking for more they are all in Portuguese on the
old 78 rpm format.
They were on Victor (RCA) and Columbia.
I never lived in Fall River. When my grandmother married she went to
Attleboro.

Rick,
I spoke with my Mom today and showed her the pictures you sent. She
remembers that her cousins were Carvalhos who lived on Pitman Street
and she thought the picture was of Bella (I didn't tell her who it was
before I showed it to her). She also mentioned her cousin Gloria
possibly being in that family - she still lives in Fall River and is
about my Mom's age (89) and works at St. Michael's Club on Webster
Street. Is any of this familiar to you? Let me know.
Joanne
