I'm so glad Cheri is giving that tutorial on how to read the records. Thank you SO much. May I add another resource on reading the handwriting?

There is a helpful (understatement) booklet published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints called "Basic Portuguese Paleography". It talks about handwriting styles, shows examples of various ways letters were shaped, discusses abbreviations & variations in spelling & naming customs , gives lists of terms and Latin words and common first names and surnames, etc etc etc, all to help you know what you are reading. It gives actual texts to practice read.

The booklet is available online, for free, in four .pdf chunks of about 10 pages each, at wiki.FamilySearch.org. You can download it and print it off. This publication was apparently put online in the last half of last year, by the way; I know that for a time it was only available on microfiche.

Go to:

There is a lot of useful information on this page.
For the handwriting booklet, go to the left "Contents" and click on "3. Additional Resources". At the very bottom of that section, there is a reference to the Basic Paleography booklet. The links to the .pdf 'chunks' are at the very end of that section, part 1, part 2, part 3, and part 4.

Eileen,
Thank you very much for this link =D> . I've downloaded and saved those PDFs. They should come in very handy.
