Lionel, our birthday boy, got a Family Finder match with the new autosomal DNA test at Family Tree DNA (FTDNA)!!!
This newer autosomal test, compares DNA (whether you are male or female) across all your lines. In order to make it work, you need a pedigree in place where you know most of your ancestors going back at least 6 or 7 generations. Ideally, that is. Lionel's match came in with a prediction (the statistics) of a 2nd to 4th cousin. As Lionel and his match compared notes, they found 4 lines that they matched on. Since they matched on multiple lines, the math does not take that into account and the prediction came in closer than reality. Reality: Lionel and his match were 6th cousins. Rick Pimentel and I will watch how the Family Finder portion of our Azores DNA study builds and will post about it. This new Family Finder (autosomal DNA) test has been out only a year now. Thanks to pioneers like Lionel, who went ahead and gave it a try, we can try for more cousin connections with this new technology/science.
