There is more than one "S. António" in the Azores. The Carvalho de Melo family is prominant in S. António além Capelas in S. Miguel. I have an index of all of the available marriage records of S. António (1607-1910) and I searched from 1800 to 1870. I found more than one João, but the names of the wives were not even close (Joaquina Rosa, Francisca de Viveiros, Madalena da Conceição). Also, the name Bettencourt is extremely rare in that parish, but there are Bettencourts in the neighboring parish of Capelas. If your people are from , this S. António, the wives were not, and the marriage was performed in the bride's parish. If you have a birth date for João Jr., you could look through the bapismal microfilms. If he was baptized in S. António, the record should state where his parents were from. The Carvalho de Melo line goes back to Roque Carvalho and Joana de Melo (m. 1751). His line does not go back any further but hers goes back to Bretanha and Fenais da Luz. Good luck! Sorry I cannot be of more help.
