Just to complete the info:

Not all dispensations mentioned in the marriage records exist, which means that
the possibility of finding the dispensation for a couple of ancestors is low.

The importance of this type of document is finding a dispensation for a
sibling of an ancestor, or an uncle/aunt, giving specific information on a
direct ancestor.

At some point dispensations show records to prove the relationship. For
example: there are records transcribed from books that don't exist today.

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Dispensation Degree Explanations

Hi Group,

Just thought I would help with the "degree" column on the marriage
dispensations that are online now from Joao Ventura (www.joaoventura.com):

1, 2, 3, 4 cons. is consanguinity (cousinship)

1, 2, 3, 4 aff. is affinity (a widower marrying his wife's sister or widow
marrying her husband's brother)

Spiritual--a widower marrying a woman who was godmother to one of his
children or widow marrying a man who was godfather to one of her children.

Hope this helps you to make an informed discision on ordering a
dispensation record.

Rosemarie
