My grandfather's name was Francisco Vieira deMello. My grandmother's name was Catarina daConceicao Xavier. He was from the village of Lajes, Pico and she was from Silveira, Pico. The story is that Franciso's father came to California to work in the gold fields. He sent for his 3 sons to come, my grandfather staying in California and the other 2 sons going back east. Franciso's father may have also been Francisco Vieira deMello. I have no information on the brothers who went east. I do have information on Catarina. Hopefully this information may strike a cord with some of you members.
